December is here

with holiday cheer

and finals we DON’T fear!

Final Exam Study Tips & Tricks

  • Study interactively

It’s better to work out practice problems and go through derivations yourself rather than just passively re-reading lengthy book chapters or notes. This way you’ll be forced to remember problem-solving techniques and incorporate knowledge built throughout the semester.

  • Find a comfortable environment

Your study environment is just as important as your study techniques. Make yourself comfortable (but not too comfortable that you’ll fall asleep!), grab snacks, put on music (or dont if it distracts you), study with friends, or by yourself — find out what works best for you!

  • Take regular breaks

For every 25 minutes of studying, take a 5 minute break! Reward yourself with some well deserved rest and relaxation in between study sessions. Your brain will retain information more efficiently and you’ll be able to remember concepts better! There are websites that can help you keep time!

  • Know what to study, and what NOT to study!

This one may sound obvious, but check the course syllabus/schedule or ask the professor what content will be on the exam, and what resources you’ll be able to use (i.e. equation sheets, open/closed notes, open/cosed book) so you know where to focus your efforts.

  • Give yourself enough time

Don’t wait until the last minute to start studying. Reading days exist to give you time to prepare, so if possible, try to use them and spread out your study sessions so you don’t get burnt out.

  • Get a good night's sleep!

Make sure you go to bed early on the night before the exam. A good night’s rest and a big breakfast will help prepare your brain for an exam much better than cramming into the wee hours of the morning.

Don’t forget self-care during these stressful times!
